The Astrosat team recently went to Thessaloniki, Greece to attend the Mid-Term Review (MTR) for SAFERS on 31 May 2022 – 1 June 2022. The team from Astrosat, led by Mike Payne, Alex Vasiliu and Arun Arumugam attended the review for the first time in-person (following the Covid-19 restriction on travel), supported remotely by Allyn Treshansky and Mick Walker. This review involved 14 project partner organisations, across 7 EU countries and resulted in successful completion of the MTR, and approval to continue the project towards the Pilot phases in France, Italy, Spain and Greece which have been scheduled over the coming months.
The MTR reinforced our view that for SAFERS, we are part of an incredibly talented and capable consortium with strong leadership and firm commitment from every partner organisation involved. The project draws upon expertise from all those involved, including experienced users, first responders and researchers, to develop a novel platform that integrates a wide range of intelligent services that informs decision-making and provides near real-time situational awareness, before, during and after an event.
Following completion of this project, Astrosat will be leading the transition to operations and commercialisation of the resulting product and/or service across Europe and worldwide.
Note: If you have not been to Thessaloniki, it is worth visiting! The second biggest city in Greece after Athens (most Thessalonians may argue this point!), Thessaloniki is sprawled with humble, yet intricate architecture and history and it is undoubtedly a culinary haven for foodies (like me!). The temperature soared into the mid-30s (deg C) in May-June. Having grown up and lived on an island in Asia for the first 18 years of my life, beach-life is very much a part of what I am used to, and indeed look forward to during my travels. Unfortunately, I did not get an opportunity to explore any decent beaches (other than Agia Triada, which lines the western side of the city) on this occasion. Exploring the Halkidiki peninsula on my next visit to Greece will feature high up on my agenda (after all work commitments of course! 😊).
