“Every problem has a space solution”

Astrosat (Astro Science and Technology) was founded in 2012 by CEO Steve Lee as an ‘ideas factory’, to take data from space and use it to solve problems on Earth.

Steve graduated in Astrophysics from Edinburgh University. He supported his studies, and financed his start-up business, by busking and playing his guitar in gigs.

A self-confessed romantic who wants to change the world for the better, Steve wanted from the outset for Astrosat to take a different approach to downstream space services. “Space for humanity” is how he describes it. And his vision was to reflect that in the culture of the business he established to be a sector disruptor. His ambition is for Astrosat to be the ‘pirates’ of the industry, and he likes to refer to the team he has assembled as ‘the crew’.

The company scored an early success with its ThermCERT product which attracted recognition from ESA (the European Space Agency) in the form of a prestigious Copernicus Award. Astrosat went on to develop ThermCERT as a fuel-poverty prediction tool to support the Energy Company Obligation (ECO), and it is now being deployed nationwide by EOn.

In 2015 Astrosat won support under the UK Space Agencies International Partnership Program for its RAPID (Disaster support) and FMAP (Deforestation) proposals.

As the business grew, in 2016 it moved to the old Free Church building overlooking the Esk Bridge in Musselburgh, just east of the Edinburgh city boundary, renaming it “Copernicus Kirk”, in honour of the ‘founder of modern astronomy’ Nicolaus Copernicus.

More recent developments have included projects supported under a variety of funding streams, including:

  • Accelerating housing delivery, with Waltham Forest Council and GovTech/SBRI.
  • Better targeted land information for protected areas, with Scottish Natural Heritage (now NatureScot) and GovTech/SBRI
  • Detecting construction from space, with University of Leicester and SPRINT.
  • Supporting the Adult Social Care supply-chain post-Covid19, with Shropshire Council and Innovate UK.
  • Social isolation prediction, with support from ESA.

Underpinning all of these is our core product, ORBIS by Astrosat; our proprietary geospatial data visualisation platform, which is part of a program of activities supported by Scottish Enterprise.

In the wake of the Covid 19 pandemic the company moved to fully remote working, demonstrating that it can still thrive and deliver solutions to human problems under difficult conditions using its AgilePM and Scrum control frameworks. From tyro start-up, through numerous successful projects, Astrosat has made its name in the aerospace sector as an established and trusted partner.
