Astrosat worked with the Vietnamese Government to help them respond to natural disasters with greater accuracy and speed.
Rapid (Recovery and Protection in Disaster) was designed to collate disparate sources of data relating to storm forecasting and relief efforts into a single, informative dashboard.
The system collects satellite images and combines them with on-the-ground information to create one useful map visualisation. Rapid reviews a range of storm forecasts from different sources and brings them together into the integrated dashboard, enabling the user to make more informed decisions before, during and after an event.
Where previously, the Vietnamese Government had to draw on data from numerous different sources, now all these sources can all be processed through Rapid to create one unified viewpoint.
Rapid can be used at three different stages of storm events: forecasting disasters, providing reports before an event, and reporting after the event to better prepare for future occurrences and to provide reactive support.
The process
Rapid involves three stages that encompass both the prediction of and swift response to typhoons and flooding in Vietnam.
Stormer In this stage, we consolidate key data sources into our central tool, then communicate that data to the key stakeholders in disaster anticipation.
Impact Plan and Risk Assessment One of Rapid’s key strengths is visualising the impact of an event. Our maps depict the areas at the greatest risk based on population. They’re designed for the users to be able to filter down to the most relevant information and archives are made of the impact for future assessment.
3rd Party Data Ingestion The platform should be able to evolve according to user needs. Our end goal is to create a system that configures data from multiple sources and presents it in a visual, accessible manner.
Who we work with
The Vietnamese Government To develop Rapid we’ve worked with multiple branches of the Vietnamese Government to create a programme with tangible, real-world impact.
Long Hai Space Technology Long Hai use space and aeronautics technologies for government and commercial surveillance and monitoring services via satellites, UAVs and digital technologies.
UKSA The UK Space Agency is responsible for the country’s civil space programme and supported Astrosat in making Rapid happen.
